  Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian navigator who explored the New World. He claimed to be the first person to set foot on the new continent. The name America comes from Amerigo Vespucci.

  Vasco Núñez de Balboa, was an explorer, ruler and Spanish conqueror. He led an expedition that crossed the isthmus of Panama. It was there that he descovered a new ocean, the Pacific Ocean, and confirmed that America was a new continent. Vasco Núñez de Balboa, climing the Pacific Ocean in the name of the Crow of Castile.

  Ferdinand Magellan was a military, marine and Portuguese navigator. He led an expedition to find a sea route connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The expedition departed from Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Sevilla). During the long voyage, Magellan reached the Mariana Islands and then the Philippines. He died in the Philippines, trying to subdue the indigenous people.

  Juan Sebastián Elcano, was the capitain of Magellan. He took control of the expedition and led the return voyage. This expedition was the first voyage around the world. It demostrated that the Earth is round, and that its diameter is much large than that calculated by Colombus.
